Social networking site Facebook is introducing a ranking system for good and bad application developers.

Announced at F8, the Facebook developers conference in San Francisco, it aims to improve the quality of applications on offer.

Dubbed Application Verification it will promote “secure, respectful and transparent” add-ons to the site.

“We haven’t done enough to reward the good or punish the abusive,” said Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg.

“We’re going to have to find a way to ensure the applications that provide the most long term value are the ones that are succeeding,” he said. (more…)

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 takes off

Over lunch, Microsoft executives fleshed out the Xbox/Netflix arrangement announced this morning at the video game industry’s annual event, the E3 Media & Business Summit, here in Los Angeles.
The Netflix/Xbox announcement is part of a battle being waged over which device and service will be the entertainment hub in people’s homes. For those who want to watch movies downloaded from the Internet on their TVs, having an Xbox will make it easier, executives said. (Netflix already has a partnership with a company it backed called Roku that sells a box that also streams video content from Netflix over the Internet and on to television sets). (more…)

Microsoft Bid $40 for Yahoo, Now at $26, Papers Show

Microsoft Corp. offered $40 a share for Yahoo! Inc. in January 2007, according to court papers unsealed in a lawsuit over Yahoo’s refusal to accept the bid.Lawyers for Yahoo investors said company officials “gave the back of their hand” to Microsoft’s efforts to negotiate a buyout, according to papers unsealed today in Delaware Chancery Court. Some Yahoo shareholders seek to hold Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang and other directors liable for failing to accept the offer. Yahoo shares closed today at $26.40. (more…)

Microsoft releases Vista update

Microsoft has released a service update for all versions of its Windows Vista operating system. The computer giant claims that the update improves the stability, security and performance of the software.

The update, or service pack, includes some fixes released before now and adds many new ones as well.

Microsoft has warned that the update could clash with some security software and other programs customers may have installed on their machine. (more…)

FTC Approves Google-DoubleClick Deal

The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday cleared the way for Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s proposed $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick. Members voted 4-1 to end an investigation into whether the acquisition would substantially reduce competition in the online advertising market. One commissioner predicted the acquisition would radically alter the nature of online marketing. (more…)
